Photomosaics
A custom photomosaic of one or more pictures of your choice can be made using a large number of your
own digital pictures. A photomosaic uses small versions of your own pictures chosen carefully to
approximate the small fragments of the full target image.
From a distance the target image will be clearly recognizable if enough small images are used. Usually
the final image should be at least 16x20 inches, but 20x24 or 20x30 is better. As you increase the
number and variety of the images available the results can be improved, so the more images you have
to better the result can be. If you have a relatively low number of personal images, the variety
can always be increased by using travel pictures in the Studio MarcoAngelo database as used in most
of the samples shown here.
The following examples show some low resolution samples of what photomosaics look like. Each mosaic is
made out of 24 tiles horizontally and 32 tiles vertically for a total of 768 individual images.

A Unique Gift or Keepsake
A few years ago these types of photomosaics were popular at art stores and recently they have appeared
in a couple of advertizing campaigns on television in an animated form. Our service not only allows
you to pick the target image to be approximated by the photomosaic, but even better is that it will use
your own digital pictures to form the mosaic. For example, a large picture of your children made up of
a whole bunch of small pictures of your childre, family members, events, trips, or whatever else you
have in digital picture form, for example, is priceless and unique. Your friends and neighbors are
very unlikely to have such a keepsake.
Suitable Target Pictures
Since the small images can only approximate the larger target image, it is best to limit the amount of
detail in the target image. So if you want recognizable pictures of people or places, they should take up
most of the image and not contain too many small critical parts. More than three or four faces of people
would probably not work very well unless they take up nearly the entire picture.
We can generally tell from a picture how good a target image it may make and if there is too much detail
or the faces or other recognizable items are too small. The picture can, however, be cropped to concentrate
on the most important part to omit extraneous information.
