Photomosaics - Detailed Sample
In the following example, a target image is made up of 5,400 tiny square images, each 100 pixels in height
and width. The final image was printed as a mounted poster 20 inches wide and 30 inches high, with each
tiny image being 1/3 of an inch in size, so there are 9 small images in each square inch of final printed area.
This is large enough to be able to recognize the contents of the picture and yet at a distance the full picture
is clearly recognizable.
The original database of pictures contained nearly 2,000 individual pictures. Each of these is then turned into
three versions, by cropping square portions out of it, so that a rectangular picture gets turned into three
slightly different square pictures.
In order to approximate the final image more accurately in color, the original images are changed in color slightly,
up to 10%. This helps in details such as the red lips in case the original database of images does not contain
images of the correct hue. This effect can be customized according to individual client preferences.
In this detailed example, the target image looks like this:
In this first example, this is a scaled version of the final output, and we'll be zooming in to see
what's in the highlighted rectangle. This is the full image, made of 5,400 individual images in
60 columns and 90 rows.
As we start zooming in we start to see the tiny individual images.
At this level the image is made up of 32x48 individual images:
As we continue zooming in we start to see the individual images more clearly.
At this level the image is made up of 16x24 individual images:
As we keep going, the individual images are getting quite clear and recognizable.
At this level the image is made up of 8x12 individual images:
At the maximum zoom level, the individual images are clear and the pictures are very recognizable.
At this level the image is made up of 4x6 individual images. These images are each 100x100 pixels
and represent the full resolution:
In this second example, this is again a scaled version of the final output, and we'll be zooming in to see
